THE COMPETITION
The purpose of the competition is to provide an opportunity for students to speak publicly on a designated topic of general interest. The competition starts at the local club or school level and proceeds through levels of competition ending several months later with the statewide contest. After the club level, the student, if successful each time, moves through the zone, region and district levels. The competition culminates with the five statewide district winners vying for the title of BEST IN THE STATE.
The Pasadena Host Lions Club will host its annual student speaker contest on February 20, 2023, at 6:30 p.m at the Pasadena Host Lions Club Meeting in the Pasadena Senior Center – 85 East Holly Street, Pasadena, CA 91103 ( Location subject to change. Final location will be provided to registered contestants.)
Students must prepare a speech no less than 5 minutes and no longer than 10 min. The contest is open to Pasadena students in grades 9th through 12th , including public schools, charter schools, private schools, home schools or independent study. - ( Please download the handbook for additional contest details)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Speakers are allowed the use of the following aides:
▪ School & Club competition full manuscript
▪ Zone competition three 3” x 5” index cards, both sides
▪ Region competition three 3” x 5” index cards, both sides
▪ District & State competition one 3” x 5” index card, both sides
Speech Evaluation Standards Points indicated are maximum scores.
1. THE TEXT ALONE (Thought content)
Did the speaker present important ideas?
a. Originality................................................................10 points
b. The speech adhered to the subject title ..................10 points
c. Main points were supported by evidence................10 points
d. Conclusion was clearly presented...........................10 points
2. DELIVERY ALONE
Did the speaker give a formal public speech?
a. Emphasis, voice control..........................................10 points
b. Enunciation, pronunciation......................................10 points
c. Sincerity, enthusiasm, poise ..................................10 points
3. OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE EFFORT
a. Was the speech a well-rounded, cohesive effort? ..10 points
b. Was it logical and organized? .................................10 points
c. Was the speaker persuasive?.................................10 points

Student Speaker Contest Deadline Dates :
- Club Contest - Pasadena Host Lions Club will be held on February 20, 2024
- The Club shall present $100.00 to the winner and $25.00 to each finalist. (Who completes minimum time).
- Zone Contest by March 18, 2024 at Pasadena Senior Center - The District shall present $150.00 to the winner only
- Region Contest by April 15, 2024 - The District shall present $250.00 to the winner only.
- District Contest by May 6, 2024 - The winner shall receive a $4,500.00 scholarship.
- Area Contest by May 20, 2024 - The winners shall receive a $6,500.00 scholarship.
- State Final Contest on June 15, 2024 TBA @ Council of Governors meeting- The winner of the MD4 contest shall receive a $10,000.00 scholarship.
